White Spirit

White Spirit

White spirit is a gentle solvent that is made from petroleum extract. It goes by several names, including mineral turpentine, turpentine replacement, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum), Varsol, and Solvent 402. White spirit is a combination of paraffin and aromatic hydrocarbons that is distilled between 200 and 142 degrees Celsius. These solvents are liquid, transparent, coloured water with a slight odour, chemically stable, and do not cause corrosion.

Application

White spirit is the base ingredient of paint thinner. In addition to being used in combination with cutting oil as a lubricant for thread cutting and reaming, mineral spirits are also utilized in industry to clean and degrease machine tools and components.

Turpentine made from vegetables may be replaced at a lower cost with mineral spirits, which are derived from petroleum. Often employed as an organic solvent in various applications, it also serves as a paint thinner for oil-based paint and brush cleaning. Mineral spirits are often used to clean and unclog screens after printing with plastisol and oil-based textile inks. They are also employed in the thinning of monoprinting inks.
